Book Review: A Scientific Framework for Compassion and Social Justice by J. A. Sadavoy & M. L. Zube

Updated: Mar 23, 2023

I love to read. I tend to have 2-3 books going at once. A fiction (usually thriller/spy/24 hours to save the world-or a wife finds out her husband's ex-wife died in mysterious circumstances and is she next?!), a non-fiction, and a "work" related non-fiction.

These book reviews will focus on the work-related non-fiction books. Often I will read a book and think of a colleague or supervisee who I think would also love it, and I share the book with them so we can discuss it. These blog posts will hopefully encourage you to pick up a book either directly or peripherally related to behaviour analysis and behaviourism and give it a read.

So I thought I'd start with an excellent read.

This book was published in 2022 and is a book composed of different chapters written by different authors. It is a broad, encompassing overview of social justice issues in the world today through a behaviour analytic lens.

To be honest, this was one of the books that got me back to frequent reading. The ease of knowing I could read one chapter every day or so made the task less daunting. Each chapter is only a couple of pages, written by different authors, and the author writes from their direct experience with the topic.

The topics are broad and global, with some interesting topics I had never considered before. There were chapters on corruption, Islamophobia, stigma, and something I had never heard of but was quite fascinating called nepantla.

While I was making my way through the book, I had many discussions with colleagues and supervisees about specific chapters and couldn't help but recommend the book to them!

I find this book a great resource for bringing up discussion topics during supervision, particularly ethical discussions, as well as building up our knowledge base of inclusion and diversity in our practices.

I would recommend checking out your local university library to see if you can borrow a copy, as there are plenty of topics of interest. I've included a link below for where you can purchase it online.

Let me know your thoughts if you've read it!
