Okay, so I know we aren't supposed to judge books by their covers, but... come on! I mean, look at it! All the colours and shapes and lines - so much going on!
But of course, it's not just the cover that drew me to this book, but the content as well!
I found this book on the Behavioral Scientist's Books of 2022 list, and this jumped out at me, not only because of the colourful cover but the fact because it would help provide some scientific background and understanding of what I love the music I do. (Which, heads up, is pretty much all music. I love all music.)
While there are two authors, it really only seemed as if Susan Rogers was writing the book, providing examples and research, and Ogi Ogas was more of a second thought when Susan would use him as a multiple examplar of what she was explaining. In saying that, it was still quite an interesting read given Susan's background as a musical engineer (yes, she worked with Prince - as the title would suggest) and then moved into a neuroscience career.
The book is set out in chapters discussing elements of music, lyrics, timbre etc., and interestingly enough has a playlist you can follow along with as you listen!
It was interesting to hear more about the physiological changes noted during different experiments on music and the brain, and there was an idea framed in behavioural science of reinforcement history and your favourite music that I hadn't considered in that way before!
So check it out if you're interested in learning a bit more about why you like the music you do!
